Ebook About Jon of Dun Add has created a civilization where before there had only been isolated pockets of humanity in a shattered cosmos.Young knight Pal is one of the most respected members of Lord Jon’s Hall of Champions. But Pal’s greatest talent lies not on the field of battle, though he’s no slouch there. He is also a Maker, one who can repair the tools the Ancients had left—sometimes. Moreover, he has learned to use his warrior dog’s ability to predict motion better than any human could, an ability that has saved his skin and won the day more than once. Now, Pal will need all his talent—as a fighter, as a Maker, and as a Champion—to deal with the monsters the Waste throws at him—and to deal with his fellow humans. For there are those who would destroy Dun Add and Lord Jon’s vision of a humanity united in peace from within . . .At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).About David Drake:“Drake deftly weaves a web of political machinations and intrigue that vividly depicts the costs of war. The first two books in this series were interesting stories that were well written and imaginative. This one falls short. It reads almost as if it were a rough plot outline, not a developed story. Each of the scenes had the potential to be very good. But most were dealt with in a few pages even though the story could have expanded to multiple chapters. The books seems to lurch from story to story without developing each one and only loosely tying them together. The editing also left a lot to be desired. There was one story which can't keep straight which character was saying what. There were enough ideas here that could have almost filled two much more substantial novels. Too bad they were given such short shrift. First, let me say I am a HUGE David Drake fan. I have read everything he has published, some many times. Sadly, this is the first book I have read that does not live up to his standards. The story is completely disjointed with events transpiring with no setup and very little resolution. One character's name changes from Hector to Harvey halfway through and then changes back, making the story very hard to follow. No rational for anyone's actions is given more than a cursory explanation and situations pop up completely out of nowhere. Pal's narrow view of right vs. wrong, central to his character, goes from a positive rational for his trustworthiness and dedication to a simple minded "do it my way or I'll kill you" sociopathy. He frequently laments how he doesn't understand why people do things but doesn't hesitate to slaughter anyone who violates his ethos. At the beginning Drake lists a series of multiple sources of myth he drew from to write this book. It feels like he tried to tie too many disparate stories together into one and came up with an almost incomprehensible pastiche.
